Mr. Garcia’s Science Class Guidelines
The following guidelines are listed in order to ensure that your classroom provides the best learning environment possible for you. You are to follow the rules set forth in your student handbook along with the classroom rules listed below. All material is adequately reviewed and practiced
in class; also quizzes or tests are always announced in advance. In extenuating circumstances, if a student should earn a grade less than 20 on a test, the student has two days to retake the test. Also, there are no last minute extra-credit assignments. There are positive and negative consequences associated with a student’s educational motivation.
Classroom Rules:
1. Students have been provided with a laptop. Laptops will be used when digital information needs to be accessed. Cell phones and other electronic devices should be out of sight.
2. Treat everyone in the classroom with courtesy and respect.
3. In order to succeed in my class, you must come prepared to class everyday with the following materials: Laptop (to access electronic textbook), notebook, paper, and pencil. A calculator will be provided in class.
4. Absolutely, no eating or drinking in the classroom. Make-up, caps, hats, or electronic devices will be confiscated and turned in to the business agent or assistant principal.
5. You will be counted tardy if you are not in your assigned seat by the time the tardy bell rings.
6. No profane or vulgar language is to be spoken for any reason.
7. Raise your hand if you wish to contribute to a discussion, otherwise, no talking during class.
8. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
9. If you have a problem, speak to me privately about it.
10. No destruction of school property.
Consequences*:
1. Verbal Warning.
2. Conference with student and warning of the offense/document on student discipline log.
3. Contact made with parent phone call/document on student discipline log.
4. If situation involves an academic or counseling related issue, student may be referred to the grade level counselor.
5. Referral to Administrator.
*(Sequence of steps is determined by incident.)
Responsibility:
1 YOU are responsible for the grades that you receive in this class (especially if you are a senior).
2. YOU are responsible for keeping up with all assignments and tests (especially if you are a senior).
3. Do not wait until the last minute to complete assignments; all of you have the capability to get an “A” in this course with a little time and effort (especially if you are a senior).
4. Remember that I am here to help you as much as possible, but I can not learn the material for you.
5. Laptops are issued to you, and you are responsible for their whereabouts and condition.
6. Absences, for whatever reason, will always affect your ability to learn. If you are not here to take notes, listen to a lecture, or participate in a learning activity you are at a disadvantage. Borrowing notes from somebody is not the same as being here.
Tutoring:
Students needing extra help can get assistance from me or from any other tutoring system set up at EPHS. I will announce my official tutoring schedule after the first week of school, but most years it has usually been before school.
Passes: No student will be allowed to leave the class without a pass. Students need to try to take care of bathroom visits during transition.
Late Work: Work is expected to be turned in when it is due. Failure to do so will result in negative consequences. Once I have graded and returned graded assignments to classmates, it is too late to turn in that assignment.
Make-up Work: Make-up work is your responsibility! If you have been absent, whatever the reason, it is up to you to obtain make-up work from me. If you are going to be absent for an extended period of time you or your parents/guardians need to contact me for makeup work. Check the Assignment Board for the week’s assignments or ask another student. Quizzes or tests must be taken within 2 days. All students are required to attend and participate in all laboratory activities. Most labs CANNOT be made up. The percentage of credit that you receive on make-up work depends on the attendance code and time of submission. Remember, excessive absences will result in you not getting credit for this class.
My Grading Policy: Daily assignments and notebook grades are worth 30%; lab activities are worth 30%; quizzes, tests, and projects are worth 30% (some of these items count more than once); and a10% category for some participation activities. Both the parent/guardian and the student acknowledge that they have read and understand the guidelines established for this class; also, are aware that grades can be monitored via student/parent portal and 3 week progress reports.
New Grading Policy in effect until further notice: 40% Summative Assessment, 40% Formative Assessment, 20% Engagement Activity
